The Holden V8 engine family, launched in 1969, marked Australia’s first domestically produced V8. This engine series began with the 253 (4.2L) and 308 (5.0L) variants, powering iconic vehicles from the HT Holden through to the VK Commodore and becoming a cornerstone of Australian motorsport.
The 253, the smallest variant, offered a balance of power and fuel economy, while the 308 became the performance flagship. The Holden 304 was introduced in 1985 to help the VK Commodore compete in Group A touring car racing. A destroked version of the 308 engine, the 304 was sold as a 5.0L engine, allowing the VK to race with a lower minimum weight in Group A racing. The 304 continued in production through the 1990s in vehicles like the VS Commodore and up to VT before being discontinued in 2000.
Featured in models like the Holden Commodore and Torana, this engine has become synonymous with Australian muscle cars, captivating automotive enthusiasts seeking an exhilarating driving experience. From the original 253 first featured in the Holden HT through the 308, 304, and 350 stroker featured in later Commodores, these engines are known for their distinct exhaust note and excellent power capability when fitted with performance upgrades.
