The EA Falcon, launched in 1988, marked a huge investment in Ford Australia’s lineup. Known internally by its development code name “Project EA26,” FoA invested $700 million in rejuvenating the Falcon brand with modern engineering and styling. The EA Falcon introduced a new design language, with more rounded and aerodynamic lines compared to its predecessor, the XF Falcon. This modern look was intended to appeal to a broader audience and keep up with global automotive trends, and was critically acclaimed worldwide.

Under the hood, the EA Falcon offered a range of revised engine options, including the 3.2 litre and 3.9 litre SOHC inline-six engines. Ford introduced its class leading EEC-IV Electronic Fuel Injection ECU on all models, includingthrottlebodyinjectedandMPFIversions.

These engines were designed to be paired with either a BTR 4 speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission, however delays on the automatic transmission meant the Series 1 EA launched with the outgoing 3 Speed Auto. The EA Falcon featured a new suspension system, enhancing ride comfort and handling, which contributed to a more refined driving experience.

The EA Falcon was offered in various trim levels, including the GL, S, Fairmont, and the sporty S-Pack, catering to a wide range of customers from families to enthusiasts. Despite facing some initial reliability issues, the EA Falcon ultimately established itself as a significant player in the Australian market, paving the way for a decade of E-Series models.

Today, the EA Falcon is remembered as a pivotal model in Ford Australia’s history, blending innovation with style and laying the groundwork for future advancements in the Falcon lineup. Its design laid the foundations for the next 10 years of Falcon sedan, wagon and ute models right up to the introduction of the AU Falcon.
