Hardline vs Braided Hose: When to Upgrade Your Fuel Delivery System

Building a high performance fuel system isn’t just about dropping in a massive aftermarket fuel pump. If your lines, fittings, and hoses can’t support the required volume – or worse, allow fuel vapours to permeate into your cabin – you’re setting yourself up for pressure drops, vapour lock, or a dangerous fire risk.

Choosing between aluminium hard line, stainless steel braided rubber, and PTFE nylon-lined fuel hose comes down to three core factors outside of budget and aesthetics: flow dynamics, routing flexibility, and fuel type (Pump 98 vs E85).

Stainless Steel Braided Rubber Hose (NBR / Synthetic)

Standard AN braided rubber hose has been a go to for years, offering great flexibility with a tight bend radius and good abrasion resistance under the chassis.

The catch is that rubber is naturally porous to fuels. Petrol vapours eventually leach through the walls, creating a constant fuel smell in enclosed spaces.

PTFE Lined Nylon & Stainless Braided Hose

PTFE hose is the gold standard for modern street, track, and E85-fuelled builds. Replacing the rubber inner core with a smooth Teflon lining, wrapped in stainless or nylon braid, solves these issues mentioned above.

Essentially vapour & safe for all fuels by being impervious to methanol, ethanol, E85, and race fuels, with zero vapour permeation. This makes PTFE safe for cabin routed lines or boot mounted surge tanks in race applications.

Lower friction also means the slick inner bore reduces pressure loss over long chassis runs.

PTFE also has a higher temperature resistance as compared with rubber, so is useful near hot areas. We still recommend using our fire proof heat sleeve if the hose will be exposed to an exhaust manifold.

Rigid Aluminium Hardline

For permanent underbody plumbing, hard line aluminium tubing delivers a clean, professional finish that lifts aesthetics at the same time. Available in raw aluminium or black, its smooth internal surfaces provides minimal pressure drop with zero line expansion, for maximum flow & protection.

Aluminium better resists road debris and exhaust heat, making it ideal for long, straight chassis runs before transitioning to flexible PTFE hose at the engine bay.
